Yesterday

The Golden Rule"

Daily
prayer: Father,
You have placed Your children in a world where
people push and shove to be first. Because of
their self-importance they clamor for recognition
and will stop at nothing until they get what they
want in life, good or bad. But You've called us to
view life from a perspective that considers others
as important as ourselves. We are to have a humble
attitude that puts You first, others second and
ourselves last in everything we do. In our
humanity this is impossible, but as we are being
transformed into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus,
we become more like Him. Our love and
consideration for others grow and we apply the
golden rule to our lives where we do to others as
we would have them do to us. May this relationship
rule guide us as we make decisions that affect
others and us. Help us to have the mind of Christ
in all that we do. Amen.

Yesterday
we saw a story in reference to the photo on the
right. The unidentified woman took this photo on
a recent flight that showed a pair of dirty feet
on her headrest, dangling just inches above her.
Now that's gross and a stunning example of how not
to practice the Golden Rule!
The Golden Rule is one of the most familiar sayings from our Lord. I suppose I first learned it at VBS or Sunday School as a child in the church my family attended in Belton, Missouri. Brooksyne remembers it being posted at her public elementary school in Tulsa Oklahoma.
Consideration is the practice of the golden rule in the big and small details of life; beginning in the home and extending to all relationships, including public places such as the grocery store, school, the workplace and even public transportation.
This month marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. East Berlin was Communist controlled and West Berlin was a free country. A wall, built by the East German government separated the city to prevent the people from the East escaping to freedom in the west.
I heard a story about an event that took place in Germany during the Cold War before the wall came down. One day some people in East Berlin took a truckload of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side. The people of West Berlin could have done the same thing. But instead they took a truckload of canned goods, bread, and milk and other goods and neatly stacked it on the East Berlin side. On top of this stack they placed the sign: "EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS." What a subtle yet powerful message and a great example of the Golden Rule.
Included in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount it easily stands out as a simple principle for thinking not only of oneself but also treating others fairly. I learned it as, "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (KJV). The NASV reads, "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you." A similar expression of the golden rule is found in Philippians 2:4, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others".
But many live with an attitude of "Treat others the same way they have treated you". Today let us consider the Golden Rule in relation to the way we treat one another in small ways.
What if the billions of personal interactions that take place all over the world today were truly characterized by this golden rule? Well, that would certainly bring about world peace but in reality that just isn't going to happen until the return of the Prince of Peace.
But by God's transforming grace you and I can do something in our little corner of the world. Today, in your speech and in your actions, keep this attitude foremost in your heart: "In humility consider others better than yourselves." When you do so, the Golden Rule will play itself out in your actions without your even giving conscious thought to it.

travels take us through some beautiful and interesting
areas which we often share in our photos. We drive
through covered bridges which are usually one lane,
although years ago we went through one in Indiana that
was two lanes entering into a large state park. Once I
approached a covered bridge here in Lancaster County
and just as I was preparing to enter another car
approached from the opposite side. With no means to
communicate, we both backed up to yield and waited for
the other to proceed. Finally I passed through as it
was evident that the other driver was insisting on
being the more considerate one! I rolled down my
window as I passed, waved and mouthed "Thank You" as
he smiled and responded, "You're welcome". It occurred
to me that this is a small microcosm of what our
attitudes should be toward one another.
