Oak leaf
A green veined leaf from our front oak tree, hopefully not green with envy of the other spectacular foliage we see from various kinds of trees.

"When I Am Afraid"

Message summary: Choose to trust in God when you're afraid, but better yet trust Him at all times!

"When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Psalm 56:3).

Last night November roared in like a lion with heavy rains, howling winds and at times thunder and lightning, a late season storm for our area. Our border collie Mollie is terrified of storms and for several hours we dealt with her fears; sometimes patiently, other times frustrated especially in the wee early morning hours. She paces throughout the house apparently looking for a place of relief, and our bed is not the place where we offer relief to our canine. We think she may have fears in part due to the changes in barometric pressure since she seems to sense that a storm is coming before we do.

We have never found an effective way of dealing with her fears other than to just to ride the storm out. We sure haven't been able to share spiritual concepts with her, though we've surely told her now and then, "God will take care of you in the storm"! But she just won't listen.

In the daily text David acknowledges occasions of fear in his life, "when I am afraid". Some fears are rational, others irrational.

Certainly there is a rational basis for our fears given the evil around us. This verse is so powerful to me and speaks not only of the great resource we have in our God but also our responsibility in attaining it.  David shares his personal testimony of what he does when he is afraid, "I will trust in you".

So as we pray and express our trust in God we build up our assurance based upon His promises. Fundamentally we need to have a deep assurance that our lives are in His hands. When we sincerely pray, "I will trust in You" if any kind of fear comes our way, it takes our eyes off the fearsome matter and puts them on Jesus who speaks peace to the fierce storm.

As we mature in our love for God, we come to comprehend that we have nothing to fear, for our Father has everything under control. We need to see the fear driven out and that's what God's perfect love will do.

D.L. Moody said we can choose to travel this earthly journey first or second class based on Psalm 56:3:

Second Class is "When I am afraid, I will trust in You"
First Class is "I will trust in You."

In other words don't choose to trust in God only when you're afraid, but trust Him at all times, then you're less likely to be afraid!

When I am afraid I will trust in You,
I will trust in You, I will trust in You.
When I am afraid I will trust in You,
In God whose word I praise.

In God I trust,
When I am afraid.
In God I trust,
In God whose word I praise.

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we learn in Scripture that we have no need to fear because You have promised never to leave us nor forsake us. You are our refuge and strength and an ever present help in troubling, fearsome situations. You don't abandon us in our troubles but come alongside us and take hold of us with Your righteous right hand. Because of that, instead of being afraid, we can learn to trust in You, turning our fear into praise toward You, for who You are and how You watch over us even in the night hours.

Donate to Daily Encouragement Net We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support  but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners.

Our ministry labor is comprised of approximately half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive compensation. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income.

If you would consider making a donation to our ministry see here for more information.
