"Farm Show Witness"

"In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

Yesterday afternoon we went to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which is similar to a State Fair in other states but for some reason held each year in the dead of winter in the city of Harrisburg in a large complex of buildings.  We enjoy walking through looking at the animals, produce, farm equipment, scads of other displays and tasting food samples. We certainly wanted to see the butter sculpture made with 1,000 pounds of Land of Lakes butter.

2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show witness
As we walked through the exhibition area we were heartened a by a group of older gentlemen seeking to provide a witness for the Lord called the Fellowship of Christian Farmers. Their motto is "Serving, Sowing, Reaping for Christ Around the World".  They sought to engage in conversation with passersby to provide a witness for Christ at the Farm Show.

2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show witnessOrville, a retired farmer from Danville, PA struck up a conversation with Brooksyne.  He was standing outside his booth holding a wordless book bracelet in his hand, and offered it to her. Not knowing of her Christian background, he tied it to her wrist and began to explain the meaning of the bracelet. "The rawhide reminds us that Jesus was the Sacrificial Lamb who died for our sins.  The knots at the beginning and end of the five colored beads remind us that Jesus is Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End."

Orville went on to explain the different colors of the beads as he interweaved Scripture.  His knowledge of the Scriptures was inspiring and the warmth that flowed from his spirit and friendly countenance made her sense the love of Christ.  It was certainly the highlight of our visit to the Farm Show.  We were able to commend them for their work and also encourage them with Scripture just as they had encouraged us.

Today, all over the world the light is shining as faithful followers of Christ seek to let His light shine through them. We are all called to let the light of Christ shine through us and penetrate a very cold and dark world.  In Christ's teaching He uses two very common, recognizable illustrations, salt and light, to demonstrate the responsibilities His followers have in the world in which they live.  What a tribute to our Lord's teaching wisdom that His followers can always identify with these two object illustrations regardless of when or where they live.

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12) and how wonderful that He would call each of His followers to spread His light. Individually our call is not to light the entire world, but each of us is called to light our own God-ordained part.  Individually the light we produce may seem negligible, but collectively we all produce a lot of light!  It is simply not known how different things would be without the millions of believers that walk about daily reflecting the light of Jesus Christ.

Today let us each let our light shine before men as we seek to represent Jesus.  May they see our good deeds (a result of God's grace) and praise our Father in heaven!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Lord Jesus, as I commit myself to You this day, I ask that You make me a glowing ember of Your truth, Your wisdom, and Your compassionate mercy.  I want my light to shine for You so that all glory will be directed back to You, my source of light.  If I find myself in the midst of settings engaged in ungodly conversation help me not to blend in.  But rather help me to be the light of Your glory in my conversation, full of grace seasoned with salt, so that I will honor You in all I say and do.  In Your name, Jesus, I pray.  Amen.
