"Mighty God"

Note: This week we are examining the five descriptive names used for the Messiah in Isaiah 9:6. Today we will consider "Mighty God".

Message Summary:

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). "Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and His name is holy" (Luke 1:48,49). "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time" (1 Peter 5:6).

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Yesterday morning at precisely 11:15 I was doing the final work on posting the Daily Encouragement when I heard a loud boom and our power went out. The boom reminded me of the sonic booms* I heard as a child growing up near an Air Force Base in the Kansas City area.

Our younger dog, Mollie, for some reason, immediately gets very nervous when the power goes out although we don't know why. Brooksyne wonders she can sense the lack of the buzzing sounds we either don't hear of just tune out or it may be an alarm chirping that we just don't pay much attention to.

We wondered if there had been an accident and I stepped outside to investigate but saw no evidence of any problems. I called PPL, our local power company to report the outage and within a half hour a crew was in our front yard and quickly found the culprit, a very dead, very electrocuted squirrel laying under the line! In fact when PPL called us they used the term "animal contact" to describe the cause of the problem. A few minutes after the PPL team came our power was back on.

Solomon's wisdom

Electricity, although invisible, is a mighty force. Back in September we wrote a message titled, "A Power You Cannot See" and shared about an electrical engineer I met in New England who shared how his faith in an unseen God was easier due to his knowledge of the unseen power of electricity. Today let us consider the "mighty God" which is the third name mentioned for the Messiah in Isaiah 9:6.

Throughout the Bible descriptions of God's might are abundant. The first reference is in genesis 49:24 that speaks of "the Mighty One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel". Earlier Isaiah writes of "the Lord God of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel".

However the more common designation is "Almighty". The first reference is in Genesis 17:1, “I am God Almighty" and the last is in Revelation 21:22, "the Lord God the Almighty".

But significant in the prophecy by Isaiah some 700 years before Christ's incarnation is the declaration of His divinity. In Isaiah it always denotes (as Thomas Cheyne observes) "divinity in an absolute sense; it is never used hyperbolically or metaphorically."

In Mary's song recorded in Luke before Christ's birth "Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and His name is holy" (Luke 1:48,49). We wonder to what extent she realized the mighty God was growing inside her in His incarnate state.

Our dutiful response to this mighty God is summed up by the Apostle Peter,
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time" (1 Peter 5:6).

Be encouraged today,

DonateSpecial Appeal: We want to thank all who have financially supported our ministry this past year. We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support at this time but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. We typically see a spike in giving at the end of the year for which we are most thankful. Our ministry labor is comprised of half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive a fee. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income. If you would like to make a donation to our ministry see here for more information.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

Regarding yesterday's message on the title "Counselor" David Penley, a friend from Texas and a profeesor teaching pastoral counseling in seminary, writes,  'There is no better counsel than that from He Who creates us and knows us better than anyone - God Himself. In His Word we find "everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence" (2 Peter 1:3).

"A Power You Cannot See"

*
A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound in the case of my childhood it was jet aircraft. See here for more info. Why Is A Sonic Boom So Loud? Video (Interesting but this lady talks way to fast IMHO)

Finally Today: We met Richard Dresselhaus and his wife Elnora in California in October. He also has a daily inspirational message titled "One For The Road" that is a blessing. Here's the one we received this morning:

Finding delight.  It’s a very pleasurable emotion.

It’s what you feel when you bite into a delicious dessert…or meet a special friend…or view a stunning sunset.

So…it’s an appropriate word to use in describing your relationship with the Lord.

David said: “Take delight in the Lord…”  And…the reasons are many.

Salvation.  The chains of sin have been broken.  You are free from condemnation. Take delight.

Purpose.  Your life has meaning.  There is something unique you have to offer. Take delight.

Heaven.  It is a place of incredible beauty.   And above all…you will be with Jesus. Take delight.

And when you do “…he will give you the desires of your heart.”
