"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me" (John 21:22). "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps" (1 Peter 2:21).

Oh God, You are my God and I will ever praise you
Oh God, You are my God and I will ever praise you
And I will seek You in the morning and I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me and I will follow You all of my days

In His Steps"In His Steps", a classic written by Charles Sheldon, is the second best-selling Christian book of all time (following the Bible). Over 30 million copies have been sold. Brooksyne read it in her early teen years shortly after her decision to follow Christ.  It had a profound effect upon her commitment in walking in the ways of the Lord.  I read it in my college years. It is also the inspiration behind the WWJD theme that was so popular (and heavily commercialized) years ago.

Garrett Sheldon, the great-grandson of Charles, wrote, "My great-grandfather grew up on a farm in the mid-1800's.  His father was a missionary and a church planter. They read the Bible aloud every day, so that by the time Charles went to school, he had heard the entire Bible read aloud five times! This prepared him to write 'In His Steps' which changed the world with the question, 'What Would Jesus Do?'."

The first recorded words that Peter heard directed personally to him from Jesus were "Come, follow me"
(Matthew 4:19a).

Come, Follow Me The last recorded personal words to Peter from Jesus were "You must follow me".  What a clear message to Peter and to all of the call to be His disciple! "Come, follow me" remains the supreme call of Christ to each of us.

Many years later when Peter was writing his epistles he again recalled this call to follow and writes, "You should follow in His steps". Following in His steps, we should "walk, even as He walked" (1 John 2:6). Charles Sheldon wanted to attract local college students to God, so he began preaching a series of practical, Sunday evening sermons on how to follow "in His steps" in business, in journalism, in other careers. From the popular series he wrote magazine articles, which in time became the best-selling book "In His Steps".

Child tracing lettersBible teacher Kenneth Wuest makes an interesting observation concerning walking in His steps: "Peter changes over easily from the idea of a child tracing over the writing of the writing-master to a Christian planting his feet in the foot-prints left by our Lord. In this context, these footprints are foot-prints of suffering. But the illustration holds good for our Lord’s entire life. Just as a child slowly, with painstaking effort and close application, follows the shape of the letters of his teacher and thus learns to write, so saints should with like painstaking effort and by close application, endeavor to be like the Lord Jesus in their own personal lives. Or, as a small child endeavors to walk in the footprints made by his father’s feet in the snow, so we are to follow in the path which our Lord took. The Greek word “follow” means literally “to take the same road” as someone else takes. We should walk the same road that Jesus walked, in short, be Christ-like."

Today dear friends, let us again hear this call amid the clamor. Hear it simply. Hear it clearly.  Hear it personally. "Come, follow me." Let us seek to walk in His steps!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer:
Father, as I seek You in the morning through prayer and Scripture reading I hear Your personal calling to me through the words of Christ Jesus, "Come, follow me." Jesus suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow in His steps and walk blamelessly, according to the law of the Lord. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed so we do well to walk in all Your ways and honor You in the way we live our Christian lives. May we be a sweet smelling fragrance to you as we offer up our lives. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Mount Gretna lake 10/6/15
Yesterday following a chaplain visit we rode our bikes along the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail and took a side trip to the scenic village of Mount Gretna. The photo above shows Conewago Lake. We are not seeing much foliage change but expect to make this same ride again in several weeks and see lots of color.

Mount Gretna cottage 10/6/15
Mount Gretna has a mountain village feel with colorful cottages.
