Lancaster County scene 12/4/16
There's a natural beauty in this lone sparse tree viewed from our church parking lot.

"Isn't He Wonderful?"

Message Summary:
Today let us consider the Names of Christ. In my tie collection I have a Names of Christ tie which includes several of the common names used in Scripture for Jesus such as "Lamb of God", "Prince of Peace", "Good Shepherd" and many others. This week we will share a five part series this week based on names for the Messiah used in Isaiah 9:6.

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

What do people call you? You probably have a preferred name. Mine is Stephen, although I also like my middle name, Clark, which I am told is based upon being a distant relative of Abram Clark, who signed the Declaration of Independence. We also may have nicknames. In Junior High School my close friends called me "Spiderweb". Brooksyne's mother often called her "Brooksy".

We also may have characteristics that form the basis of our nicknames. When we lived in New England we often heard about a gangster named "Stephen, the rifleman, Flemmi", a close associate of mob boss Whitey Bulger. But descriptive characteristics can also be a good thing. When I see people working faithfully week after week, year after year I may add the adjective "steady" to their name.

Names of God tieToday let us consider the Names of Christ. In my tie collection I have a Names of Christ tie which includes several of the common names used in Scripture for Jesus such as "Lamb of God", "Prince of Peace", "Good Shepherd" and many others.

We had a familiar Scripture reading in our church service yesterday that I project will be a five part series this week based on names for the Messiah used in Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

The first descriptive name we will consider is "Wonderful". Some versions use this word as an adjective for Counselor but many others treat it as a separate description. Of course either way it doesn't change basic theology. Jesus is wonderful and He is a wonderful counselor!

Isaiah made this prophetic statement some 700 years before Christ's incarnation, when God became flesh. When Christ walked the soil of this earth His life was characterized by wonders. In one text we see how these wonders often caused problems with the religious leaders of that time. "But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant" (Matthew 21:15).

Wonderful is defined as "excellent; great; marvelous". Of course it's root meaning is "full of wonder". The Messiah would be "wonderful" in His nature as God-Man; in His teaching, which "astonished" those who heard it (Matthew 7:28); in His doings (Isaiah 25:1); in the circumstances of His birth and death; in His resurrection, and in His ascension. "Wonder" would be the first sentiment which His manifestation would provoke, and thus this descriptive epithet is placed first.

In Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost he stated concerning Jesus, "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know" (Acts 2:22).

Do you know of the miracles, wonders and signs that Jesus performed not only in the past but right now in our own generation? How about in your personal life? Jesus continues to be full of wonders!

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we're grateful for the wonder and amazement of the gift of salvation given to us through the incarnation of Your Son, Jesus. The manner of His birth was wonderful; His humility, His miracles, His self-denial, His sacrificial death, His resurrection and ascension all are amazingly wonderful amidst His many wonderful character traits. The greatest and most wonderful accomplishment is that though He was sinless He took my sins upon Himself that I might have forgiveness through His death and resurrection. Truly You are wonderful. Amen.

DonateSpecial Appeal: We want to thank all who have financially supported our ministry this past year. We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support at this time but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. We typically see a spike in giving at the end of the year for which we are most thankful. Our ministry labor is comprised of half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive a fee. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income. If you would like to make a donation to our ministry see here for more information or donate directly online here.  This will open to page that states WEBER,STEPHEN CHAP, Specialized Chaplaincy Ministry ID: 700001-237376

Thank you!

Lancaster Mennonite Children's Choir 12/4/16
Brooksyne's Note: Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of hearing the 145 voice choir of the children/youth of the Mennonite Children's Choir of Lancaster(ages K-12) along with the Irish Blessing Band. It was an impressive concert due to the Christmas message and the skills/giftings of the instructors, musicians, and the students. Making it extra special was seeing one of my Sunday School students, Tirza, who sings in the choir.
