Message summary: God's Word, the Holy Scriptures, is our guiding light in this sin-darkened world and we're sure to lose our way unless we walk in His light. As we face another year it occurs to me that it could be seen as a dark road ahead. ![]() "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His word What a glory He sheds on our way While we do His good will He abides with us still And with all who will trust and obey LED lights have sure become popular the last several years. It seems they're attached to a lot of products. My new phone came with a small battery pack that also has an LED flashlight. The last several times we went to a Gaither Homecoming concert a tiny LED flasher was given to those attending. It's certainly a lot safer in a large crowd than candles. I recall many years ago when I served on our district's youth committee and planned for a youth convention each Spring with some ten thousand attending, mostly young people. It's hard for me to imagine now, but we actually had a candlelight communion service using real candles! My favorite LED product is a headband with LED lights. I last used it when we rode our bikes through an abandoned turnpike tunnel last Fall on a Men's campout. But I'm not very creative when it comes to purchasing gifts for Brooksyne. I find the endless variety of possible gift ideas stressful. When she does give me a tip I usually postpone the shopping, then get forgetful or confused about whether I am getting the right item. However occasionally I strike gift-giving gold. About ten years ago I managed to surprise her with a very unusual gift that really pleased her; slippers with tiny motion-activated headlights. As we get older we tend to be getting up during the night more often so Brooksyne can just slip her feet into the soft headlight slippers and off she goes without turning on lights. She had a great time showing them off to our friends that got quite a chuckle out of them. The moving lights mesmerized the house pets as they saw these tiny lights roaming through the dark house. As you would expect by now we quickly saw a spiritual lesson with these lighted slippers as they remind us of the great spiritual truth expressed in Psalm 119:105: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Indeed God's Word, the Holy Scriptures, is our guiding light in this sin-darkened world and we're sure to lose our way unless we walk in His light. As we face another year it occurs to me that it could be seen as a dark road ahead. As the hymn writer put it, Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand. The Biblical Illustrator commentary points to four truths concerning God's Word as a lamp. This lamp is: 1. Ever needful. Man needs a guide through life. His mental eyes are dim, and the road is dreary, intricate, and dark.
2. Always available. It suits every path in life. The path of the young and aged, the celibate and the married, the rich and the poor, the merchant, statesman, and philosopher, etc. 3. All-sufficient. It throws light on every conceivable step in life, and the light is clear and sufficient. None need stumble anywhere who hold it before them. 4. Inextinguishable. It burns as brightly in the hands of the youngest disciple today as it did in the hands of the old patriarchs. It is a quenchless light. The advancing intelligence of humanity will never supersede its necessity or dim its lustre. As we face another year may we all walk in accordance to the Word which is a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path! We want to thank all who have financially supported our ministry this past year. We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support at this time but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. Our ministry labor is comprised of half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive a fee (of course this percentage of time varies week by week). Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each phase would provide half of our ministry expenses and income. If you would like to make a donation to our ministry see here for more information or donate directly online through my chaplain account here. Donations are tax deductible and will be receipted directly by my chaplaincy endorsing ministry.
