"Serving God's Purpose"

Due to a very busy schedule podcast unavailable today.

"One generation passes away, and another generation comes" (Ecclesiastes 1:4). "When David had served God's purpose in his own generation he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed" (Acts 13:36).

In Monday's daily encouragement we wrote about a message our friend Galen shared at a men and boys breakfast this last Saturday. He challenged them to be faithful in serving the Lord, testifying to God's care through the ups and downs of life.

Galen is a lifelong farmer and he showed a slide show with old photos from the farm which has been in his family for 140 years and eight generations. One slide showed him as a young farmer holding his oldest son Jason next to a brand new hay baler he purchased in 1976.

After the breakfast we were in the parking lot looking at farm equipment and old cars several had brought to display. The boys were having a good time getting up on the tractors and running around playing outside as the men visited with one another. Galen had brought the same baler as in the above picture with Jason.

I took a photo of Galen along with Jason and three of his grandsons nearly 40 years later. Looks like he takes good care of his farm machinery! The photo shows how generations progress. The young farmer in the first photo is now a seasoned grandpa. The little baby in the first photo is now a grown man and a father himself. The three little boys have now entered this season of our existence that we call "life on this earth". I wonder who will take the photo for the next generation?

Our life is a part of the overall fulfillment of God's purpose. Consider the first part of the second daily text, "When David had served God's purpose in his own generation." In the historical books we have a lot of information on David. Apart from Moses, we may have more biographical information on David than any other Old Testament personality. But the apostle Paul, preaching in a Jewish synagogue in Pisidian Antioch, makes a simple statement concerning David's life, "When David had served God's purpose in his own generation."

God places us all on this earth for a season, a period of time known as our "own generation.” The amount of time we have varies; some die young, others in their middle ages and yet others at a "ripe old age", one of the most colorful descriptions of age in the Scriptures! (See Genesis 25:8.) But like David, all of us (except the final generation) will eventually fall asleep (die) and our physical bodies will decay though our spirits will soar.

We can live our life for self or in consecration to God's purpose.  Many of you have heard the saying, “Only one life will soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last.” Today, let us, like David, seek to serve God’s purpose in our generation! I ask you, how are you impacting others for Christ and eternity?

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Thankful manDaily prayer: Father, we're grateful for those throughout history who chose to be men and women of faith, whose hearts were fashioned in Your image, for those who served Your purpose in their generation. We also want to serve Your purpose in our generation.  Help us to stay steadfast and strong as we run this race set before us.  Thankfully, in this race, we're not in competition to be the only prizewinner. Instead we take hold of the hands of those who run with us and invite those on the sidelines to join us.  We want to cross the finish line together so that we will all receive the grand prize of life eternal with You.  May we never give up! Amen.

White Oak friends 6/19/14
Yesterday Brooksyne blended right in with the office help at White Oak though she didn't receive the office memo, "Wear black and white".  Actually there was no office memo but interestingly they all showed up in their B/W attire and Brooksyne thought it worthy of a photo.  (L to R): Brenda, Rachel, Brooksyne and Puja.

Rich Landis 6/19/14
Yesterday we had the opportunity to share about our chaplain ministry to a group of business leaders in a group called "Convene". It is chaired by our friend Ron Hoover, who has been very supportive of our ministry. One friend I was blessed to catch up with is Rich Landis whom I met shortly after moving to Lancaster County. Rich is a CPA who had a brain tumor requiring major surgery several years ago at Johns Hopkins. He walked me through his treatment and shared concerning a recent good report. We rejoice in his remarkable recovery!

White Oak Corian display 6/19/14
White Oak Display makes displays that many of you have seen at stores like Bass Pro Shop, Cabellas, Lowes, Home Depot and many others. Brooksyne is checking out a tiny Corian sink figuring it would make a good "finger bowl".
