"This God Is Our God"

"For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end" (Psalm 48:14).

Psalm 48 is familiar to many of us because we have sung a chorus based on the first two verses, "Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised…"  This Psalm is written by a group of singers known as the "Sons of Korah".  Most likely these were temple singers that lived during the period of the divided kingdom.

This Psalm extols God for His greatness, His deliverance, His unfailing love and other attributes. It includes a virtual walking tour around the wall of the Holy City. "Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation" (12, 13).

But the Psalm ends with our daily text which empowers us as we transmit the life-changing message of God's truths to our generation. Let us examine it today and consider its truth and receive its assurance.

"For this God is our God for ever and ever."  This is our great God.  The God who is our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend.  Consider His great acts throughout history.  Consider the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Of Moses, Joshua, Samuel and David.  The God of Ruth, Esther and Mary.  Of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Daniel.  Of Peter, Stephen and Paul.  The God of those who have stood up throughout the long history of the church.  Martin Luther, John Wesley, D.L. Moody and countless others.

In your own life consider the many who have walked faithfully with God and impacted your life.  Some are now with Christ, others still labor here below.  And today you and I can declare, "This God is our God"!  And He will be for ever and ever!"

And, "He will be our guide even to the end." What a great promise this is.  Let us praise God today and live our lives faithfully in His service!

God and God alone is fit to take the universe's throne.
Let everything that lives reserve its truest praise,
For God and God alone.

God and God alone created all these things we call our own.
From the mighty to the small, the glory in them all,
Is God's and God's alone.

God and God alone reveals the truth of all we call unknown.
All the best and worst of man won't change the Master's plan,
It's God's and God's alone.

God and God alone will be the joy of our eternal home.
He will be our one desire; our hearts will never tire,
Of God and God alone. *

Brooksyne's prayer – Lord, You are great in power, unsurpassed in wisdom, and Your grace knows no bounds.  There is none who compares with You.  You are worthy of our reverence and unending praise.  Though Your marvelous handiwork is seen in every direction we look, Your most awesome work is visible in the way You change and redirect our lives.  When we consider the saints of old and the marvelous saving power exhibited in their lives we're encouraged by their example and their enduring walk with You.  We recognize these "greats" of the past were faithful and powerful examples because they did not seek to build their own kingdom or take credit for their accomplishments.  Instead they declared it is God and God alone who deserves our truest praise.  So we praise You, Lord, and You alone this morning.
