"Blind Eyes Opened"

"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Have you seen a block of wood or needlework with what on first sight appears to be just strange, illegible characters? It makes no sense until you see it just right.  But you look at it a certain way, perhaps squinting and its very clear that it’s the letters that spell, "Jesus". Several years ago a reader from California sent me one he had made out of a block of wood.

A friend of mine once saw a couple of men coming upon this saying on a sticker on the back window of a van.  One said to the other "I know that says something, I just know what!"  They looked on for a few minutes until in exasperation they walked away and one of them frustratingly exclaimed, "Jesus Christ, I know that says something."  But of course they never saw it.

In a spiritual sense this describes the condition of the human race.  The apostle Paul says, "the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers."  "The god of this age" is Satan, who is the sworn enemy of our souls.  He has blinded the minds of unbelievers. This blindness prevents unbelievers from seeing "the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ."  Only a miraculous conversion can open the eyes of the unbeliever.

Following his conversion Paul received his call to ministry directly from the Lord. "I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me" (Acts 26:17,18).

John Newton, who is best known for writing "Amazing Grace", expressed it this way, "I once was blind, but now I see."  I hope your spiritual eyes have been opened and you are rejoicing today in the gospel of the glory of Christ!

PS: I am still adapting temporarily to the loss of my home computer Friday a technician stopped by to install a new hard drive but it still wouldn't work. Now they are going to install a new motherboard and both disk drives. Thankfully the computer is under warranty!  Until I am working from my home office again I am unable to add current photos to the message or prepare a current audio version. Also since I am using the computer in our church’s office Brooksyne is not with me to edit my writing and write a note!
