"The Universal Call"

"From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised" (Psalm 113:3).

We had a brilliant sunrise early this morning. Brooksyne and I were out for our walk and watched it come up over the horizon like a red rubber ball. We both spontaneously began singing a Scripture chorus based on the daily verse. What a joy to again experience this day the love of God and be a recipient of His grace through Jesus Christ. Indeed the Lord’s Name is to be praised!

Many years ago I recall visiting with dear friends on Martha’s Vineyard and watching a sunset from the beach at Menemsha Harbor. As the sun disappeared over the ocean everyone on the beach stood up, broke out in applause and shouted, “encore!” “encore!” It was an astounding sight and memorable experience. I don’t know what others were clapping for but for my family and friends it was another opportunity to praise the Lord.

What an interesting way the Psalmist expresses this universal call to praise the Name of the Lord.  This call is not limited geographically, for each part of planet earth experiences the rising and setting of the sun.  (Although I really doubt if very many of our readers have the brilliant sunrises and sunsets that we do out here in the country!) This call is not limited to a specific time, for this event happens daily.  This call is not limited to a specific people, for all peoples on earth today live where the sun rises and sets. *

We have many choices today.  Some are relatively inconsequential, other are very important.  The most important choice we can make is that we will love and serve God today.  And one way we can do that is by joining millions of our redeemed brothers and sisters all around the earth in praising the Name of the Lord! Will you join me?

Be encouraged today,

PS: I am still adapting temporarily to the loss of the hard drive on my home computer. I am unable to add current photos to the message or prepare a current audio version. Since I am using the computer in our church’s office Brooksyne is not with me to write a note. Hopefully I will be able to be back in my normal place early next week. It’s hard for me to be out of my normal computer writing element. I have to have things set up in a certain peculiar way to function! Also I am way behind in dealing with email since I am using a rather clutzy webmail method.

As mentioned yesterday our daughter Ester is fine and I just spoke to her. She recovered quickly from the heart procedure she had Wednesday but is now on another medication (coumadin), which must be closely monitored.

* Some astute observer will probably point out that there are actually certain times of the year when the sun never actually rises and sets at the Polar Regions!
