"Honoring Mother"

"Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth" (Ephesians 6:2-3).

This morning my Mother is very sick. Yesterday Brooksyne shared a note about this and she will give a medical update as well in the footer of this message. As soon as I get this message out I will be going over to the hospital to see her.

My dad passed away over 7 years ago and Brooksyne and I have been caring for Mom for most of the time since then. Even as she deals with her current condition (she is probably unaware of how serious she is), she maintains her feistiness.  Yesterday a doctor asked her a question and she paused to consider her answer. He began to repeat the question assuming she hadn't heard him but she belted out, "I heard you just fine the first time."

She's bounced back before and she just may do so again. She's now 84 and of course her life is in God's hands. She sure has a will to go on and yesterday she emphatically told me she expected to go to the Senior Center on Friday!

As I've matured in the Lord (and gotten older as well!) the above commandment has increasingly become more meaningful to me.  It establishes the first order in human society and is the only one of the Ten Commandments to specifically deal with the home.  The Greek word for honor is "timao" and conveys the sense "to prize".

Well, I prize my Mom.  She wholeheartedly loves her family and so many people. It occurs to me that there are quite a few reading this message who know just what I mean.

Today I urge all of you to honor your parents.  Call them, write them, do you very best to go see them.  Tell them you love them and appreciate all they've done for you.  Be specific.  Do it before it's too late.  Do it now.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen C. Weber

Medical Update on Mom:  Thank you for your prayers and interest in Georgia Mae.  She continues to need 10 liters of oxygen to bring her oxygen saturation to acceptable levels.  She has a significant chest infection and fluid in her lungs.  She is now in the Intermediate care unit of Hershey Hospital.

O, give us homes with godly fathers, mothers,
Who always place their hope and trust in Him;
Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers,
Whose calm and courage trouble cannot dim;
A home where each finds joy in serving others,
And love still shines, though days be dark and grim.

(A prayer by Barbara B. Hart, put to the Finlandia tune)

I regularly encourage readers to write a tribute to their parents. I am so glad I did this. It documents for me my desire to honor my folks and was also a real blessing to them. Here's more information about this along with samples.
